Coking coal is leading China's coal and coke complex lower. On 28 September the main coking coal contract fell 2.64% to 1,454.5 yuan a ton by noon, with open interest up about 14,000 lots, as Shanxi pushed mines back into production and China was expected to open up to US coal imports ¹. Loss-making steel mills have started cutting what they pay for coke: in a first round, Tangshan mills lowered wet-quenched coke by 100 yuan a ton and dry-quenched by 110 yuan from 1 October ², and analysts expect 2 to 3 rounds of cuts in October totalling 200 to 300 yuan ¹. Buying is cautious too, with Shanxi's online coking coal auctions selling 338,000 of the 640,000 tons listed, a 47.2% failure rate ². Zhengxin Futures still sees room for coking coal to fall after the holiday, but not a sharp decline, since mine output is unlikely to return to pre-accident levels ³.
